How to Choose the Right Living Room Furniture

If you are moving into a new home, redecorating or just simply want a change of scenery, picking your living room furniture can be a bit of a nightmare if you have to choose a style that matches everyone’s taste.

Do you go with modern or antique reproduction furniture? Bright colours or more subdued? Well one of the easiest ways to narrow down your choice is by choosing the right materials that suits your room. As with many homes, each room has its own particular character that puts out a certain vibe or a mood. Depending on the colour scheme, the furniture layout and even the shape of the room, finding the living room furniture that will pair perfectly with your home is often a tricky task.

Spend some time looking through interior decorating magazines to get a good idea of the style you want to achieve, but don’t make the style look out of place in your room, especially if you have any period sconces or wall panelling.

Measure Your Room to Ensure A Complimentary Scale

The first thing you need to do to ensure that you have the perfect living room furniture is to know the size of your room. Choosing large sofas and cabinets that look too overpowering in a smaller room will ruin the overall look and make you feel like a prisoner in your own style. Measure up your room accurately, and you will have a base figure as to what size furniture will suit your room the best.
Elegant, period furniture tends to go best with living rooms that have high ceilings, due to the furniture often having elegant, long legs for tables and curved shapes and designs that lend itself to a more opulent and larger than life scale.

Traditional or Modern?

Modern furniture on the other hand is more low-hanging, with many sofas being low-profile, minimal and simple – these modern styles of furniture work well in smaller rooms, rooms with low ceilings as well as simple rooms with flat walls and no ceiling roses or patterns.

Choosing the best furniture will also be determined by your colour scheme. Think about it for a second, you may like the look of old vintage green leather and wood armchairs, but if you have yellow walls and a red carpet, you are going to give your guests a headache.

Choosing Your Colour Scheme

Choose the colour scheme for your room wisely and choose a furniture style that matches it. Think of using your furniture as an additional wall you can paint on and use colours and textures to bring life into a plain-looking room, or tone down an overly lavish ceiling pattern or curved walls with a classic piece of furniture that can complement the overall look.
Choosing the right type of furniture will allow your room to flow, wall to wall with a single colour pallet that compliments each other colour, as well as compliments the furniture pieces in the room itself.

Think about buying a furniture piece that is a talking point of the room if the natural focal point of the room is a plain wall, or support a grand fireplace with a similarly grand bookshelf either side to really bring out the features of your room for truly stunning decoration with classic or modern furniture to set your living room a cut above the rest.
